Metal Chocolates’ live debut was inspired, lively, and original. I don’t find myself moved by hip hop too often. But, this duo, Rik Rude (of Fresh Espresso) and Mr. Icing (OC Notes), was a treat to say the least.
To open, Metal Chocolates played an Internet-released promo, High Tea, wherein the two served themselves high tea on stage, complete with tiny tea cups and the sing-along chorus, “pinkies in the air.” Towards the end, we in the crowd were graced with some rolling, driving, understated beats, leaving me feeling like I had walked into a hipster bar in my own hood only to be serenaded by the soul of Donny Hathaway over fresh beats. Keep your eye on these dudes. I think they might be onto something. I’m hoping to see another of their stellar stage performances, preferably with more falsetto by Mr. Icing (do you take requests?).

When I was posting this I kept writing "mental" chocolates. Almost every time I wrote metal that n slipped in there. Freudian?
